Metal cored finish.

IL post this on UKW as well, but here goes, am running 1.6mm bohler metal core in spray transfer, I have a series of beads to weld in, around 15 to create a toe of around and inch, I have issues getting the finish I want, the beads leave a corrugated finish, my cure has been to cap the entire weld with a series of stringers with a 7018 electrode, this is eating into time, anyway I can improve the finish to an acceptable standard to take the stick out the equation???

yes, the bead profile is tidy and super flat for single and double/triple passes, its when I start to get into a high no. of passes it looks untidy...

Also whilst your here AL, is all Metal cored wire sold un coated have a ****** of a time keeping the rust out of even new spools

It is possible to get cu coated but the copper isnt there to prevent rusting. It isnt a continuous layer of copper so it could suffer rust spots just as easy. The "bare" stuff is usually coated and it should resist a degree of damp. You will just have to keep it better.

Back to the "appearance". Are you letting it get too hot on the later passes. You can get a sort of "boiled" appearance.

Bit of as shot in the dark, but is the 'glassy slag' from the previous run/s fouling subseqent welds?

Doesnt sound like its the wire if you are getting decent first/second runs from it.

Bohler technical department offer any advise?

Don't suppose there are any photos? While it's unlikely I'll be able to offer suggestions I still haven't got a clue what the problem is.

There's no need to just describe things on here, and half the UKW folk are on here anyway.

TBH I'm a bit p**** about the rust issue, I bought the rolls around 3 months ago on a special as no one seems to hold stock of anything other than the norm, ordered 5 rolls of 1.2-1.6, 2 rolls have been scraped fresh from the pack still wrapped, now although they've not been oven stored, they have been kept dry and in exactly the same conditions as some supramig, and some 1.6 solid core, for the same amount of time these are all perfect, the supplier took an age to get them to me and I'm now thinking they got damp on there jouney.......

I think you might be right on the inter pass temps, the build of heat and the speed I'm depositing the filler down must have some bearing.....

I'm ordering some flux cored and some metal cored up tomorrow, from BOC (Iv fallen out of bed with my bohler supplier on the fact when his mouth moves a lie is about to come out) I can spec Lincoln wires, whats the coated metal cored called?

Malcolm I havent taken any pics, as Im spiting at the job at the mo, walked away and going to take a fresh look later in the week.....

My opinion also Paul its not the wire, they are glassy, but its mostly the shape I'm not happy with, want a flat uniform to prevent stress, you know like a big T fillet with the stick....

Outershield MC710-H is the standard product but there is now a newer version called Outershield MC700, its a lot cheaper due to where its made (Eastern Europe) but its still a good product. Ask your supplier to phone the head office and ask for it.

If my memory serves me right they are both supplied inside a sealed bag so it doesnt matter what happens to them (providing its not the bag that gets burst) during transit / storage.

To be honest though, Bohler is good stuff. My mate is the MD in Germany so I cant say otherwise, I might need a job.

ordered up some Lincoln spec'd wires today, think the interpass temps were on the high side got a much flatter profile tho Im still finishing with the lo-his, most wouldnt, and Im proberbly being finicky.....

I cant comment on the problem you are having with the finish. If I'm able to get enough weld down using solid that is what I use, its only problem areas that we use metal cored. Like around bosses where the size of the weld is limited and cracking is quite common. If I had to guess I would agree with the to hot idea.
Defiantly agree with TechnicAl, complain.
The only other thing I can add is about copper coated metal cored. We tried it and it was horrible, the arc was very unstable, very difficult to control. I cant remember the make, and haven't used any since (usually use Outershield ). Don't know if the poor results were due to the copper coating though. Never had the problem with bare cored wires or coated solid wires.
