Metabo tool tracker

Had this email a few weeks ago but only just read it,
Basically an Apple Air Tag in a rugged case.
Works with apple Find My or a metabo app.
No android version available.
I don't have an iPhone so no idea if it requires a separate app install or if it is integrated into the existing metabo app?

Price is about £25.
Don't know how much an air tag is?
Does come with a bracket to discreetly mount it inside the lid of a metabox.
Says it can be directly attached to tools but (apart from slots for cable ties) I don't see any provision on any of my tools for it.

May be of interest to those doing site work (it can alert you if it goes a certain distance from your phone)
Battery (replaceable) is given as 3yrs so might be cheap insurance to attach to generators/plant etc?

As said, I don't have an iPhone but I'm wondering if I can buy a cheap, used, contract free apple device and not pay for a sim card. Then just use it on WiFi if I ever need to locate a tag?

I don’t see why not, you would need an apple account but if you’re not using any services there shouldn’t be any cost. Air tags are about the same price but no fixing points, I suppose you could glue them on to things.
If not going to use apple products for anything else it might be simpler to look for an android version

I doubt it. Mobile phones don't.
Might give you a 'last ping' before the door of the container is closed.

Afaik the AirTags (and hence the metabo) only work via apple phones rather than satellite or phone masts. So it would need to be in range of an apple phone/device to relay its position.
I don't know if the phone user needs to have anything enabled for that?

Having said that, I've see people locate dogs in remote woodland with some sort of tracker, maybe different?

I know there are gps trackers etc available but they all seem to require some sort of paid subscription.

Quite a few cordless tools come with Bluetooth now so a better solution might just be to lock down the tool if it goes out of range of a phone or some sort of pin code lock.
Although that's probably something I'd disable immediately due to the inconvenience of using it!

Chipolo and Pebblebee are the Android equivalent "Airtags" of choice I think. Plenty of cases on Yeggi etc to print.
