Messing in the wood

There's a long straight road west of me where every telephone pole is covered with ivy that's bushed at the top, to the extent you'd think it was a row of trees.
I hadn't been along there for a while and recently discovered the maintenance crews had long since chopped the ivy at the bases and all the poles were barren.
Need to do some of that myself, the ivy here is starting to encroach a bit too much for my liking.
