I’ve been ordered by the county council ,to fell diseased trees,particularly Ash,that are within striking distance of the highway,as usual a two week warning,which was 5 weeks ago,fat chance.Anyway this copse has been neglected for decades,plus lost significant daylight,so with some junior help I started,I’m not tackling the ash ,there within a few feet of our roadside fence and are big and tall,heavily ivy clad,to the point where it’s hard to see any ash leaves,but they’re there,just 40’ up. It’s hard going,partly on a short steep bank,continually having my feet hooked in branches and tough ivy stems. Several trees have fallen,some snapped half way up then tangled into each other,so have to be cut in a sequence and then pulled at the base. I’m 70% through with the ones I’m tackling,then some dragging with a machine,clear the ground of brash and cord lengths before I call the experts for the big trees. A snapped chain has ended play for too.

That parasistic ivy just takes over the whole tree, often thought it cant be good for the tree.
Something is killing ivy around here. I had to stop and look if it had been cut because there's so much dead ivy.

Not sure if thats an urban myth, I like you though it would strangle a tree but it doesnt directly kill a tree

Where i live there is a seceret army that go around all the woods cutting the ivy at the ground around all the oak trees, it is very bad here with almost every kind of tree and post covered in the stuff, makes winter a bit unreal as everything stays green

I hate the stuff, and cut it at the bottom. The roots burrow into the trees bark sucking moisture, and the weight of it will eventually bring the tree down. The only good thing about ivy, is that its good habitat for wildlife.
It takes ages to die off, but the three tree will eventually shrug off the dead stuff.
So, this is the OPs own property, and has been ordered by the council to clear it ? Nice lot of logs. Just have to make a hole in it and clear as you go, with a bonfire for the rest

The Birch at the bottom of our garden is covered in Ivy I really ought to do something about it. The tree is healthy enough but it will be coming down eventually as it has grown too well for it's location.

Looks like you have your work cut out but have but some effort in.
Two questions.
Is the dog with the collar anything to do with the felling?
If a snapped chain, why not replace it?

Couple of years ago I was walking along our local canal, and noticed every tree was enveloped in ivy, masses of it. Some were leaning heavily towards the canal too.
But someone had been round fairly recently and cut every ivy stem at the base of every tree I could see. Some were as thick as my wrist. I assume the ivy will die off and whither/rot away, for a while anyway.
Spot the dog resides here,nice company,didn’t have a spare chain,wife collected a replacement today.
I feel a bit like @Tinbasherdan, if I was closer, I'd pop down, give a hand, honestly I could do with the exercise.
Last year I did a shed load of felling and enjoyed it.
