Mercedes diesel engine help

Winchboys Land Rover has a Mercedes OM617 3L Diesel engine fitted
I bought a thermostat QTH295 as it said on line it fitted?
It fits but only without the gasket?
So any ideas? Should I just use two O rings to seal it?

The last bit he says the gasket goes over the edge of the stat before it's installed. Does that make sense to you? Your pic looks like it may be inside out?

Yep. Gasket goes over the thermostat like on a few Renault clio engines...It leaks otherwise...smear a little grease on the gasket to help it seat in the housing...

That’s good to know. I’m not normally one to google answers I don’t know but it looked a lot like my old sprinter

Yes seal on lip of thermostat a common fitting

The stat fits but once you fit the gasket its too big?, the gasket is an O ring with a slot in it

Thanks looks an odd way of doing it but that should seal it, double checked the part numbers and its the correct one?
Now would the jiggle pin thing go in any particular place I thought at 12 O'Clock as its vertically mounted?

Thats what got me thinking but its mounted vertically.

As you say 12 o'clock looks good to me.
I've owned most of the engines in the w123 series but it was a while ago
Sure i had a 300d manual(the black one) but can't seem lay my hands on it...
