The power file injury was particularly impressive I thought....I've always assumed that tool could do only limited damage but clearly I wasn't trying hard enough.

My Bosch table saw had a guard and Irving knife. The Irving knife was too high and prevented me cutting grooves in timber, even with the guard removed. So I made a new Irving knife that is slightly lower than the blade height. This lets me cut grooves and I can still put the guard back but it is a real nuisance. You just need to use some common sense.

I guess the point there is that the ones who have been married for years are used to pain and suffering ..

Well thank you gents. I have passed on the consensus view to the organiser & he has taken it on board. There is another shed not so far away that had similar problems & i have told him who can help & he now has the problem of getting it sorted, I will let you know in due course what happens.
You never know if i get time i might even join them!

There are some arguments to be made for removing the guard (certainly for some operations) but none that I know of to remove the riving knife!

Some saws don't allow the riving knife to be set below blade height.
Impossible to make a blind cut without removing in these cases

I made sure I could do this on my current saw.

The top guard is rarely on tbh. Only for dust collection when im inside.

Rather be able to see what I'm doing and not have it foul push sticks

The organiser need to nominate a few guys to get them trainEd so there is always someone there to cut wood but ONLY the trained can be users of these machine…let’s hope they don’t get gifted a spindle-moulder…
there also needs to be a nominated first aider, or more to the point get em all trained….St johns I’m sure would help as a.fellow charity…
I'm not sure that any place can operate without some sort of H+S….
even if they sign a waiver….
Ive just had a bad run in with my defib pacemaker, out of the blue…
still in ICU….
So what happens when somebody has a bad accident..…dread to think….
**** happens so fast esp with old codgers like me….

We had an issue an issue at our Men's Shed with some less experienced men using the chop saw & getting kickbacks plus other 'experienced' men who thought they knew everything
So just before lockdown all the competent men went on a H&S course plus training on all the fixed power tools. I fitted keyed emergency stops to the tools & only the men who have had the training have a key. When you're finished using the tool hit the em stop & the machine can't be used by anyone without a key.
