melting spent brass live ammo casings

we need to melt about 100kgs of spent .22 casings down to scrap them as local scrappy stated they are now treated as live because a few got into an ex military smelters and went off lol

anyhow simplest way to melt them down into rough raw material any ideas
we thought of oxy ace with brass melted into a cast iron pot??

there is no risk these are deffo all spent from the range none live here all picked up by hand singly!

not much help to you but, I made some crates for he MOD, there job, to be filled with live shells, then roasted over a very large fire mostly consisting of tyres....this was the "official disposal method".......Mhhhhhh try that one without being called Major something...

BTW anyone who lives around these parts Bill, ZZZR thats what that bloady great black fires are on the island.....

I'm suprised the scrappy wants them melted, they usually like to see what they're getting.

I would have thought a coke burning forge force-fed with air would do the job.

Will they take them bashed flat? Logic: I 'it it wiv an 'ammer, t'ain't goin' t'go bang again. Certainly the cheapest way. Failing a coke forge, one of those Arc braseing sets with a little flux on top in a cast iron vessel?

I'm guessing here, but if you not set up for this it is probably going to cost you more than what the brass is worth scrap.

I recently got £2.10 per kilo for mixed brass, yellow & chrome. Solid or un-mixed should fetch more.

Foulness is owned by the MOD, Its all ballistic testing, Its where you see things like scrapheap challenge films if there blowing stuff up....Theres sheds that they film mortars and like in flight, towers to tether rocket motors and measure the force, and the mysterious AWE or Atomic weapons experiments which no one has a scooby what goes on in that battery, the whole island is classed as a live fireing range, they will suddenly decide to shut a lump off and thats when you get off!!!. you need (unsurprisingly) a pass to get on and off.......but TBH its apart from a scral on a piece of paper and an ask where you going and what for that seams to be about it hardly spooks.....

Of course you can always holiday on the Essex Riviera of Canvey.... in a caravan, near the gas works, by the oil refirnery....near the transfer site...choice.

Back to the original topic - assuming these are rimfires as opposed to centrefire cartridges, there is always the possibility of some unburnt powder lurking in the rim. Shouldn't be enough to worry about if you melt them down in batches but 100kg must equate to several thousand rounds which could contain a fair amount of powder between them.

I have a few thousand spent rimfire cartridges to dispose of myself, so I'll be interested to hear how you get on.

Try another scrappy.

Cheapest may be a trench dug in the soil filled with a bag of coal, wood etc with some sort of air feed. Pot or something to warm up and can leave it running all day.

Other than that crush them to a state where they cannot be used, not that anyone would want to reload .22- 1 1/2lb hammer may be the quickest and good enough to legitimately scrap barrels.

Think i may know where they come from.
