Medium Solids vs High Solids?

As a hobbiest I am not aware of the differences between these 2k paints.

I am shortly about to do a full bare shell repaint and was going to go with direct gloss air dry 2k. A local supplier has offered me Du-Pont HS 2k and says its much better but the mixing ratio is 3:1+15% and I have never used it before.

Could anyone please help?

higher solids is just that...better coverage per coat

By my own understanding, it really refers to the mixing quantity in regard to the amount of paint (direct gloss) in the mix. The standard is 2:1:10% Paint :hardener:thinner. To be honest all manufacturers differ slightly with their own interpretation and most of us pro's (ex pro's) find a paint we like and stick with it. I was once told that a medium is easier to spray for a newbie?? Just my understanding but will be more than happy to be corrected.

Ah thanks guys that is really helpful info.
I have used the standard 2:1+10% many times and found it to be ok so I think I will stick with that system, especially if the HS is more difficult to use?

I'm not sure if high solids will give you as nice of a gloss? I think high solids would be best for the likes of an engine block were you just want to stick the paint onto bare metal and turn it (say) black?

I've seen some lovely jobs where the final coat has been diluted with varnish - that would be 'low solids' I guess?

Hs means more microns per coat meaning its thicker in solids. I use high solids all the time either 2:1- or 3:1. Both atomise and flow the same. It's uhs that's different ball game doesn't flow and only 1 and half coats is needed to get the sane microns in coverage. It just doesn't tack off without baking
