Meddings Pillar Drill: Opinions

Worth a punt if it's still available? It's a 7 hour round trip for me to pick up, so what questions should I be asking before setting off? Any odd-sized/scarce as hens teeth chuck keys to be wary of? Thanks

You wont go far wrong with a Meddings drill they are quality items, the spindle should be No 2 morse taper there will be a ejector wedge slot, so you can use morse taper drills directly, or with the correct No 2 morse taper arbour, use whatever chuck you want, the key should not be a problem, Jacobs 34A is a common chuck.

Single or 3ph?
Condition of machine and table?
spindle play?
any chucks or drill bits included?

There are thousands still in use in schools colleges & industry, if its free grab it. Only real problem is if the large clock style return spring is busted, these are a pain to replace.

I have recently bought an MF2. The spring in mine had broken right at the outer end, I have bent a new tang onto the end with hand tools and heat and so far going well. Must admit it isn't getting serious serious use from me but is being used daily, I'm happy with mine.

Sounds like it may have been a small blessing, it having gone already. Sounds like that must've been some fair distance away, if it was a 7 hour round trip.
