Meddings Pillar Drill - Any Info

Anyone know much about these, particularly how they are wired up as ours keeps tripping the rcd and where we might source some gearbox oil and the correct grease. We have re-wired the reverse/forward switch on the side, as the wires had broken down and perished, but it's still tripping. There is a red white green and blue wire, but no plug was on the machine when we bought it. We may try wiring up the motor direct and that way we can rule out the switch being faulty.

How aw you wireing the plug? It should be something like this:

L1 - red
L2 - White
L3 - blue
PE - green

This may not be correct but it's how I would wire it to start with.

You're best stripping the motor down and inspecting the cable,brushes,armature windings ect.

Could be a direct short somewhere in the housing?

If there's a short within the motor it will be very unlikely that there would be anything visual to see.

Has it ever worked? Check all the wiring then get a spark with a megger in to go over the motor

It has worked the guy chucked it out of his workshop because of this issue. But it's been sat outside in the rain for a few months. We've left it to dry out overnight will go down and require the plug

I had the same drill. It's a beauty once you get it working, really powerful, and I do mean REALLY powerful, you'll be amazed. I did the same hunt for oil and eventually discovered that air tool oil is the nearest match so I ran it on that and it was fine.

If moisture has got into the motor it will need longer than that; a week or more somewhere warm like a linen cupboard or next to the hot water tank or central heating boiler. Drying will be quicker if the motor is stripped down and it's probably a good idea to take a look at the bearings anyway.

Laughs,he probably found it in the rain as well.....seems I maid the right decision about stripping it down for inspection....maybe noah had an accident with it.

Well required the plug still no joy tripping the electric took the motor off tried to dry it out in front of space heater for a few hours, wired plug directly to motor cutting out the switch and the motor is still tripping the rcd. Guess it's an issue with the motor. Going to leave it indoors a few days and try again.

its probably got dirt in the centrifugal switch and shorting to earth. other than that faulty windings . carefully take the end plate off and have a look

Why are you wasting your time putting it in front of a heater for? strip the fekker down and you can dry it out in 10 minutes with a hairdryer if water is in the casing and then also you might find the brushes need changing? considering the age its most likely they want changing?

its an induction motor it hasnt got an armature and field coils . just field coils and a rotor

Well I don't know whether its an induction or brush because I have not looked it up,just assuming its a brush type it being old.

but regardless I wouldn't waste time sticking it in front of a heater,much quicker to do and internal inspection to see if its swimming in rain water?

its a newman induction motor by the looks . if its single phase it will have a centrifugal switch on starting windings if 3 phase it wont have. a simple megger test will tell if the windings are shorting

It's three phase. Newman motor.

Blimey, 1/3 hp. Mine had a 1 HP motor, no wonder it was so strong. It will easily handle a 1 hp motor incidentally

its a newman induction motor by the looks . if its single phase it will have a centrifugal switch on starting windings if 3 phase it wont have. a simple megger test will tell if the windings are shorting

the on/off switch has reverse rotation, is this possible with a single phase motor?
