Meddings MK3 Drill

I have been looking to get a bench drill for a while and the local classifieds have shown up a Meddings Mk3 floor standing drill for £400. Seems a bit expensive when it has quite a bit of surface rust but it's claimed that it has not had much use and still has original delivery tags.

It has an MT2 chuck mount, is gear driven and is a single phase 1/2 hp model.

Is this expensive ?

meddings drills are expensive in good condition and worth buying .surface sun tan can be cleaned off easily providing its not pitted just check it out for wear by pulling the quill down and checking for sideways movement at full travell.check the drive belt to see how worn it is. if alls well probably worth it

Really gear driven, or semi-gear driven? (still has belts with a hi / low speed selection via gears, or all gear selection done with gears and no belts present)?

column diameter? throat depth? rise / fall head? rise / fall table (geared)?

Top dollar if you ask me, but its hard to say without seeing it, and you can buy a really quite crap modern drill for similar money (new).

ide have an old rusty meddings over a brand new asian bag of tat any day...you'll be hard pushed to find a better drill for the money

Currently seeing if I can do a deal on it for about £300 at the moment, they also appear to be selling a Nova Mec Brown Precision cut off machine - 3 phase motor heavily constructed with HSS 12 inch cutting blade and multi angle vice, but no price attached to it.

They seem to have a decent reputation as well, any thoughts ?

300 seems a good solid sensible price for the drill, definitely a good investment.

Yup Mec Brown cold saw also good.

That combo would be a very nice cornerstone of a small-scale metalworking facility. Good luck.

Thought £300 would be reasonable - it all depends if they want to wait for top dollar or just want to get rid.

From the looks of the list of equipment I think its a relative (dad/uncle) who is not able to use the equipment or has passed on and they made jewellery and the like.

There is loads of stuff for sale including an apex jewellers drill, norton fly press, desoutter drill press, 1950s new zealand drill press, higgs bench grinder, cromwell lathe, F J Edwards 30 inch Guillotine, 30 inch Folding machine with adjustable jaws, a murex 200 amp welder and a spot welder !!

How about making them an offer on the lot, then flogging off what you don't need - probably get the best deal that way (if you're smart, it might even pay for itself).

I might be interested in the jewellers drills for someone - could you get me some specs and decent photos please?

I have a word document with all the gear for sale but not much info on the stuff and no prices.

Have you checked Ebay? - back when I was searching for a suitable pillar drill there was always a good supply of decent drills up for auction - Meddings, Fobco, Progress. Some of them even went for stupily low amounts. Sub £100. Floor standers seem to go for less.

I picked up my Fobco Star for £60 odd and it came with a big Worco vice and a no brand bench grinder which was a bonus My Fobco has been a complete dream to use, runs smooth, drills straight and is built like a brick **** house. I genuinley love it and not even in a platonic way.

There's a few on ebay but as I'm in the Isle of Man shipping tends to get a bit expensive !!!

These are the lcoal ads and I will go investigate and see what state the machines are in and get prices etc for the other gear.

Also, those usually aren't semi-geared head drills like this one is. Always puts the price up (and rightly so - great to have).

id say thats a bargin, meddings is quality gear. ive been looking for a geared head one to replace the clarke rubbish i am using currently, although it has taken almost 4 years of hammer and its still alive.

and if it is geared you can tap threads with them aswell, bonus!

Well I went up today and agreed on £300 for the drill - its not been used for 4 years and just sat in the workshop, runs absolutely fine and the thing is solid.

Also managed to get an ingersoll rand bench grinder for £20 and a 30 inch metal folding machine with adjustable jaws for £40 (the folding machine is solid as well!)

Very happy with the deal I got.

Take his arms off, they are made just down the road from me....beats the carp out of all your sip,draper,clarke, stuff, I went down to the factory to get one for our workshop, excellent piece of kit.
