Bought this in order to diagnose a problem after a BMW “Specialist” just fleeced me of £320 to fix a problem and I got the car back with exactly the same problem and fault codes.
£50 with the discount code from eBay, what a great machine for the money with a good strong supply of smoke from the built in pump, ready to use straight away after it’s switched on, the blow up bulb managed to seal quite a large intake and it comes with all you need for vacuum lines.
Found this leak in a vacuum controller hidden at the back of the engine only really visible using a light from below and a mirror, how fun it was removing that!! Without the smoke machine I’d have had to remove lots of parts for inspection.
Big crack in the casing of this turbo changeover valve which works in conjunction with the 2 pressure controllers.
The specialist I took the car to charged me £150 for an identical part which sits on the EGR cooler, and I’ve a sneaky suspicion that they took one off another car and cleaned it up as it doesn’t look new, this part is £34.07 from the main BMW dealers, so I’m feeling a bit ripped off.
Lessons learned however it’s the first time I’ve booked a car into a garage for many many years, and the last time I will, the only reason I did is I’ve a broken metatarsal in my foot which makes crawling over an engine not much fun.
