Well it worked well for a long time and still does, I never had a problem with working in either system, 1, 11/64" 29.765mm, you can see a 64th on a rule, you have to estimate .765.

What F'kwit came up with using base 4 to measure anything?

How many units are we mixing? Inches, 8th's and 16th's.

let alone 32n'ds, 64th's, 128th's.

Arr Sir, you missing the simplicity of the the imperial system, its not 3ft 7-9/32ins....its 3ft 7-1/4 ins +1 bit...as long as you use the same stick of inches to measure and mark out theres no problem. No different from 1.763m, 1m 76cm 3mm, 176cm + 3mm, or 1763mm.. just different size bits...

Now if you were talking Chains, Perch, Rods and Roods that may be a different kettle of fish, so to speak, Sir....

As an apprentice I was made to convert every imperial size to metric 'in my head' during a spell in the machine shop. The foreman would walk by and just shout an imperial number at me and I had to answer immediately with the metric equivalent. Any hesitation resulted in a very large bundle of drill bits to sharpen by hand - so I'm quite good at that too

On a more serious note, being able to work in both units is still very useful if you work for an old company or deal with the USA.
