Me scooter fairing plastics

They was silver and a bit scratched on one or two so I decided to rub down with wet&dry 1200 grade.

I used Upol gloss black spray cans and I only did two of the fairing plastics for a trial,glad I did because there's a couple of small patches where the paint has chipped off so its a case of rubbing back down again.

I did not use a primer or sealant so was wondering should I use an acrylic primer or plastic primer this time.

Can't say i'm impressed with the Upol gloss black as I've had better results using the Simoniz gloss black,I sprayed two coats of the Upol and its still not very high gloss whereas the simoniz gave a high gloss first coat,second coat was even better.

1200 is too fine to provide grip. P800, or P600 as you are putting a solid colour down, would be better.

Primer not needed unless you rub through to plastic. Acrylic primer is not for acrylic, that's what it's based on. If the plastic is hard plastic normal primer would probably be OK.

plastics can be a nightmare to do. plastic primer is actually an adhesion agent, has to ONLY go on plastic (most but not all) wont work on paint and has to be overcoated within a critical time frame. Unless you go through into the plastic, just re finish. If you do go through in little areas, local thin coat build up of standard primer should work (post 400 grit). Either way, as Steveo and Richie say, 6-800 wet is your best prep.

I did a NRG last year and just used ordinary primer on it. It's not lost any of it's paint yet, it went onto a new front panel rubbed with 600. It was metallic blue top coat with lacquer.

It wasn't dull as such,it seemed the Upol need extra coats to build up a highish gloss whreas the simoniz took two coats for a high gloss shine.
I'm wondering whether the Upol nozzle was because it was a fan nozzle?

Ok I rub back down and use 400grade then 600grade and use the Simoniz.

go 600 all over. if you break though to the primer, just locally 400, prime, cure then rub back with 600, top coat.

So I've rubbed the fairings down with 400 wet&dry then 600 and went to wipe the fairings free of any soapy water,used paint thinners which i had for a while so.....(bearing in mind the fairings were sprayed with Upol well over 2 months ago) the damn thinners was lifting the black Upol off and making the paint sticky,whys that? good job it was in a small area and got away with just wet&dry again.

You will soften most paints with thinners, You should wipe down with panel wipe followed by a tack rag.

Dowse it well with thinners and you will fetch all the old paint off if it is still soft enough.

G10 finishing compound.
Kestral DA6 polisher.

Cannot get an even flat shine,very very minute orange peel, its noticable when up close.

Should I use courser grade first and then the G10? Got a realy good mirror finish but the orange peel is bugging me.

G10 will not do anything for orange peel, it's called finishing compound for a reason G3 may take it down as it's only rattle can paint, but you are probably best using P1200 wet followed by G3 followed by G10. Be careful though as rattle can paint will be thin.

Sprayed a minimum of 7 coats,probably more? lost count.
