Mazda 6 DPF light

Morning all,

Just picked up my lads 2010 Mazda 6 to fit a tow bar and the DPF warning light is flashing.

I've had a quick look on the inter web and it appears that it could be high oil level, service reset or needing a regen.

I know it's had a few decent motorway runs over the past week (100 miles +) so regen might not be required and I can discount that.

It was serviced by an independent garage in January this year, so maybe they didn't reset the service counter. It's done 46k by the way.

Any advice about resetting it or finding out the actual cause?

Just checked on Ytube & there are several postings for resetting the service light & also even how to reset the dpf filter light. However I wouldn't totally discount the dpf from your potential fault list. Having recently experienced problems on Audi A1 & vauxhall insignia Despite you saying the cars done a few motorway miles, how was it driven before then, dpf filters can get to a point where even a high speed run won't regenerate them, removal & mechanical cleaning (or replacement) might be the only solution. DPF's can be & are a real pain in backside.
Do you have access to a code reader that would clear up whether its oil level, service or dpf alarm.

Thanks for the reply RonA.

Just come back in after checking the oil level (OK) and performing one of the reset tips from Youtube (wire from certain terminal in fuse box to earth + pump throttle 10 times) but it's still flashing.

I just hope it's not the DPF itself......£££££

I haven't got a code reader unfortunately, so I'll have to have a ring round the local places to see if they can help out with a diagnosis.

There is a timing chain issue with the 2.2d
That causes dpf light to come on & it's not a cheap job!! Had a customer go to the garage next to us & after reading all the sensors & ash mass etc found out about this issue.

Motorway cruising should keep them clean but some are so high geared you could be bordering on the 2000 rpm requirement that most indentifies cleans the dpf.

I would normally suggest a blast for a few miles in a lower gear to get and keep the revs above 3000 rpm, the only problem there is if the light functions for a fault other than the dpf it could cause more harm then good.

Think the code reader is the only option to be on the safe side.

This is an older thread but it sounds like you might have to go to a dealer to have parameters of chain read. Hope this helps.

Sorry for not posting to the above suggestions sooner, but by the time I'd finished the tow bar, I'd had enough for the day.

Anyhow, I called the local garage where it was last serviced in February this year and the guy said bring it down and we'll quick stick it on the diagnostics. Couldn't believe it when he started it up and the light had gone out . He also checked if there were any stored fault codes in the ECU (none) and reset the system for good measure. Total cost £0. Top bloke - so I stuck a fiver in the tea & biscuit fund.

However, it came back on later in the day when I was taking it back to my lads place .

I'm aware of the potential timing chain issues, so will probably leave it with them for an hour so to try and nail down the problem.

Before then, it's going to have a little trip down the nearby M5......
