Max weldable metal thickness SIP 130amp MIG.

Hi guys what thickness of steel should I be able to weld comfortably with my SIP 130amp fan cooled MIG, I use 0.6mm wire with 100% co2 pub gas, I have some welding to do on my Landrover chassis soon and its about 2mm thick with butt and lap welding to do, I also have an oil filled Oxford 110amp arc which is weld upto the job but I would prefer to use the MIG if poss.

It should handle 2mm. Will be a bit difficult with 0.6mm as the wire speed will be real high.

I could do 3mm with my Clarke 130EN and 0.8mm wire.

Just to clarifie, that 2 pieces at 2mm total 4mm on the lap joints, will it handle that ok.

I had a 130amp clarke welder and running 0.6mm wire it would do this easily, bevel the two edges and leave a small gap then tack it in several places say every 6 inches or so. Oh and watch out for it bending up as it contracts on cooling. if you are not to experienced do a practive joint first and see how it behaves.

Just reread it lap joints, tack it both sides, stagger the tacks and it should do it fine.

Chunko with the lap joints that I need to do on the box section of my Landrover chassis I have no access to the otherside of the weld, so I will only be able to weld one side of the lap, can I get away with this.

I could but it would mean some quite accurate and long winded cutting.

I think you'd be all right with overlap joints on 2mm (but no thicker). 130 amps should be good for a decent weld in 3mm (halfway between 2mm and 4mm), though you might want to use 0.8mm wire as with 0.6mm you won't get the whole 130 amps. Give it a shot if you have some scrap to play with. I'm surprised a Landrover chassis is that thin - I thought they were 3mm.
