its the case nowadays they want a piece of paper even though they have no practical experience I couldn't give a toss what anyone has . if they can do the job its theirs

The problem is the people who have never done the job believe those with a degree know best, when what you need is people with real experience

I've applied for positions recently, not even got a look in and 2 weeks later its readvertised and they need someone st short notice. What they mean is they employed a Rupert straight out of uni and when they got on site they didnt have a clue

I applied for an interview for a large housing association . never even got a reply 2 years later im doing all a firms out of hours callouts and I mean a lot they even did the callouts for the housing association that turned me down regular I went on a night peoples electric tripping due to faulty workmanship by there daytime blokes in the end I just put on my worksheets what and where the problem was even though the guys would get there assses kicked if they cant do there job properly its hard luck

After passing my last exam I decided I would never sit another exam ever...and I stuck to it.

But to be fair I think I did too many exams up to that point...would be good to go back to studying something just for the fun of it.

I thought about doing an MBA at LSE but decided it sounded like a lot of work for little gain.

Something fun I could handle I think...with zero maths...done enough maths for 2 lifetimes!

I went through the OU route in the late 90s and was fortunate to get some financial support from my employers as my choice of courses was consistent with the job I was doing. Don't believe any blurb about a few hours of study a day - for me, it was home from work, a quick meal and up the stairs for five or six hours every evening. Worth it in the end though.

I second this. I did my first Masters (Business)part time and I swore I would never do part time again. Forget any life for years and either work or study will suffer, as will family life. None the less, 7 years later I got bored and did another Masters (engineering).. this I borrowed money off my parents and lived on a student loan and my wife's earnings and did most of it full time except the thesis. Not an option for most people but it gave much better grades.
Mature students have a noticeably different attitude. They are there to work, and the top achievers in the class were all mature students.

Sadly most of the issues are caused by the fact the person interviewing can't do the job themselves so they have no other means spotting the right people other than some often meaningless qualification.

I'm surprised more interviews don't actually involve some sort of practical/real world evaluation. I knew a guy years a go who went for an inverview as automotive painter, was told come in work clothes and after the basics he was given a job to do. If he wasn't up to it they would have found out straight away.

I agree. When I applied for welding jobs, I was expected to demonstrate that I had the necessary skills (usually a multi-run fillet or a vertical-up fillet). When I worked as a training manager, any driver trainers I recruited went through the usual handful of questions and were then required to give a demonstration drive to advanced standard followed by showing their ability to briefly assess and coach a qualified driver (me). A lot of trainers couldn't handle the second part as they tended to resort to trying to correct minor issues that were at the basic driving test level.
