Material choices

Can anyone point me in the direction of a brief guide to different grades of steel and ally in respect of uses?.
I'm sure it's not simple, its largely project dependant and brief isn't possible, but I'm just trying to get my head around the basics for sheet / box / angle / etc with no particular project in mind.
