mates going holiday and saked me whats the best to do

my reply was get your self a barclay card travel card its the cheapest to use on holiday 0 percent on buying items with comeback if it dont work when you get home

but its the cash i am not sure on i said take £150 . hes going inclusive so cant see him spending that much so my responce was just use the card to get cash they charge 3% on cash advance so if he got £300 in a week would cost him £9 and its hard to lose it then and the exchange rate is about the same as most hotels

if you take say £500 and only use £200 when you change it back again you will lose more than the £10 anyway

whats your thoughts

unless he's going somewhere odd, then i woud probably just get cash out of the hole in the wall if he needs it. I went (last week in fact) on holiday and just took an handfull of euros left over from my last trip, about £200 worth iirc and only spent about £40, and that was on some jewlrery the missus took a shine to, otherwise id have been bringing all of it back. Realistically, the vast majority of places take card these days anyway, so cash really isnt necessary unless its a odd place, or for tips etc.......

I always change as close as I can to what I think I will spend over here and take some spare UK cash and my bank card with me for emergency purposes, obviously a hotel room safe must be used and carry out each day the minimum amount you will need.

You have to watch some exchange shops especially in Spain, they advertise an excellent rate but somewhere there will be a very small notice stating that rate is only valid for £2000 exchange minimum.

the best credit card I have found is the Halifax clarity credit card, no fees for cash with drawls or purchases when you are abroad.

When I travel I normally have enough for a taxi if needed and maybe another 20-30quid on top of that, then just get cash out of the hole in the wall.

The Halifax clarity always gives you the best exchange rate on the day of the withdrawals as well, so might even save you a few quid as well.

Oh and i'm sure you already know this but always buy in the local currency as again you always get the best exchange rates possible.

Be aware that banks do nothing for free.

They may say "no fees" or "0%" or whatever, but its just smoke and mirrors - "no fees" just means that they make their money by giving you a duff exchange rate instead.

I have totally missed the Barclaycard card, your right sir this one is better. I have never noticed paying any interest on cash withdrawals though, I am now going to go back through my statements. I do only ever use this when traveling and always pay it off in full when I get home though :-)

Have a look at revolut, you get the rate as it is, comes with an app, we use it all over its been great, any money not used just spend it when your back, stop cards if you think you lost them, start them back up if you find it, split bills, check as you go the list goes on.

Depends where he's going, we went to Istanbul and the ex-rate over there was better than in UK, they'd take anything $, £ Euro.

If in Europe shop round prior to going. As above most cash withdrawals take a %, but you could put the bill on plastic.
