Marts 1st welding!

My BMW E30 has it's MOT in about 5 weeks and will fail unless the sill is welded up. I took it to a garage who said just put some sealer up there and it will be fine.

I think that's no good so I decided I would have a go at patching the sills up. I have never done metal/body work before.

This is my first go and tomorrow I hope to weld it up. Under the car is not good sill wise but it is 21yrs old!!

So what did you think of my welding lol? I ended up having someone else weld under the car. Got myself a MOT now :-)

Shame someone else ended up welding it. Did you work through the tutorials on this site at all, and practice technique on scrap before you started the repair?

Wondering whether the tutorials might need revising a bit to make them more useful.

MOT is their inspection required for road worthiness.

I remember we used to have such a thing in Florida. Here it just is an emissions inspection. My Jeep just failed

Hmmm, we only have three parishes in LA with emissions. Everywhere else, as long as the headlights, tail lights, blinkers, and horn works you're good to go. Wish they had something like that here. It would get a lot of those pieces of garbage off the road.

The MOT is Ministry of Transport test
Here in the UK a vehicle has to have a compulsory test every year to make sure that it is roadworthy.
Brand new vehicles are exempt for the first three years.
They test everything from emissions, lights, steering, brakes etc etc
Also as shown above, they fail if they have bad corrosion
Basically they test everything

I had to weld some patches on my Astra sills, for the MOT test. The tester said the welding looked like "doggy dirt" , but past it anyway. I'd rather go to the dentist than MOT the car.

Not in my opinion mate (not trying to be an a**e licker, don't even know you - just praising the site )

Not saying that mhuk hasn't read them but some people just want to get on with it - i read about it for at least an hour or 2, then messed around with some tubing and plate for about an hour, then went back and read some more and compare with the pictures and video clips. Maybe a bit much but hey
