Never really thought about bottles being that different until I spoke to a specialist who said Mapp gas was an actual thing back in the day but now they are just blends that all vary.

What’s a good price for the mapp gas bottles these days?

Mapp used to be a brand, very distinct smell because it had quite a bit of acetylene in it
Rothenberger Mapp is still the best, same for propane. They have the most in them as well

I am not sure MAPP has ever had acetylene in it. It has propyne, which is also called methylacetylene, hence the 'MA' of its name.
It is not like dioxin and meta dioxin.
I am quite confused by the quantity comparisons you make. The cylinders are sold by weight, normally 400g. Is it something like the Chinese horses where a Rothenberger gramme is bigger than a Today's Tools gramme?

Well using a blowtorch nearly every day, you kinda get used to how long a bottle lasts. Tried the Toolstation ones and they didn't last nearly as long
Same with the heat, proper Mapp burns hotter, now I haven't googled any of the fancy words but given 22 years of using them, I stand by my statement that Rothenberger Mapp is the hottest

Prefer my smaller straight side outlet type than all these silly up angled ones. Think I paid under 20 quid 10 years ago. Annoying as I want a second.
Recently lost it, boight a 4 quid adaptor and butane mix torches work just as well with mapp gas as a mapp torch. Found the torch after.
Mapp gas hasnt been available for years, substitute is propene, but they rarely say whats actually in them. Many are likely a mix with propane or butane.

MAPP (MethylAcetylene, Propadiene, Propane mix) is no longer being produced/sold. The current yellow cans contain Map-Pro (Propylene Propane mix).
The old MAPP could be used with Oxygen to give a high flame temperature (2925 degC: close to Oxy-Acetylene temperature) without the hassle/cost/weight associated with the use of Dissolved Acetylene. Most of the hassle with Acetylene is down to its readiness to dissociate (explode) and MAPP is safer in that it can be compressed without going bang.
MAPP used to be used industrially, but it was significantly more expensive to produce than Acetylene and its industrial use declined. By the Noughties, it was only being used in the little yellow disposable cylinders and it wasn't economically viable to maintain production.
With air, MAPP can provide an adiabatic flame temperature of 2020 degC: higher than a Propane:air flame at 1980 degC, but not by very much (40 degC). My guess is that a torch optimally jetted for MAPP will not be optimally jetted for Propane, so the Propane flame is unlikely to be as hot as it could be when a Propane cylinder is used on a MAPP torch. If so, the difference between MAPP and Propane on a given torch could be quite noticable.

The torch is a solid lump and heavy, so worth getting a gas can base as falls over easy. Maybe the tool station one is as well.
The maxigas 400 can still be had as said.
