Manual, truck mounted, jib crane.

Hello all.

To mount on my 6.5t iveco race car transporter. I would have ideally liked a hiab but I just can't afford it. I will be using it to load banger racing cars onto my truck and also for lifting scrappers in the yard to take to weigh in.
I am planning to mount it on the driver side of the truck and it will need around a 12ft reach. It will also need to be tall enough to lift the back end of a car high enough to get another underneath but it won't need to support it during transit.
I am planning on making it pretty much the same as the one above using heavy tube but am unsure what bearings I would need or where to get them from. Would I need bearings at all or could I use a smooth metal plate with grease?
If anyone can help with some steel sizes or tell me the calculations I would need to do to work them out i would appreciate it. It will need to lift up to 1500kg.

For the bearings, for ease and price I would suggest a fully floating hub from something like Land Rover, Twin wheel Transit or even an Iveco. Why drivers side? It's usual to have N/S. The other thing is you might get the authorities sniffing round asking for certification.

By law all lifting equipment, including existing, second-hand, leased & new must comply with the Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).



The LOLER Regulations state that all lifting equipment needs to be “thoroughly examined at specified periods”. The inspection period depends on the equipments uses and type, but the Regulations recommend that this should be at least six-monthly for tackle/accessories and at a minimum, annually for all other equipment. An insurance inspector’s visit does not satisfy the legislation,

As Badger1bear says, lifting equipment is tightly controlled. If it's purely for home use then the rules don't apply, however if you're using it in public areas or for business then you will be entering a world of pain trying to get it approved.
I suspect that you would also have to reinforce the chassis and fit outrigger legs to stabilise the truck.

It won't be used for commercial purposes, it will mainly be used in my yard to stack cars and aid loading them. It may get used in the pit area at the track but there is generally someone there with a forklift loading cars.
I will be removing the recovery bed over the winter as its a bit high and was only intended to be a temporary solution to enable me to use the truck. While the bed is off I will make a plate to fit directly onto the chassis to mount the crane on and I was going to make some outriggers too.
I'm not sure if this is going to be light enough to make it worthwhile. If it's going to end up weighing the best part of a ton I will have to do without. There's a guy in my yard that repairs big drilling rigs so I think I'll ask him to help with the welding. He has much heavier gear and is much better than me.
