Manifold coatings???

Anyone in the "classic car restoration" hobby area that thinks this might be of value I need your help.

I'm going to try doing a few trials in the new year, cleaning and coating old, or used, cast manifolds with a specialised range of coatings to help protect them.
This is targetted at the "older" car market where the "older" products aren't wanted to be exchanged with "new stainless" products. And typically being cast iron aren't wanted to rust...

Any ideas on requirements or properties of coatings from past experiences, etc?

These will mainly be of a resorative or protective measure but if people know of the compositions of said coatings it would be helpful before I try to start sourcing materials fully and to narrow the search down...

Also if there are specific "asthetic" requirements these would be helpful too...

I'm planning to start from nickel based alloys, working up to ceramics...

Many years ago a guy in the Riley RM Club had an exhaust manifold he'd coated with Kurust.

He brushed it on cold let it dry, went round the block a few times to bake it, let it all cool down, applied another coat and repeated the process. The finish looked like ceramic.

An aluminium coating is often applied, not like the heat proof aluminium paint, but proper aluminium flake. Mate his it done on his autograss car.

I haven`t had a look myself yet, but i`ve just seen an article in a magazine, company doing ceramic coatings. www.zircotec.org . Other than that, when i had a manifold made a while back, they said they could ceramic coat it, i didnt bother in the end but it was Simpson Race Exhausts, might be worth giving them a call to see if you can get any info from them. I have a spare busted manifold from mine if you want something to play with, that said, you can probably find plenty down the scrappy.

Do you see any problems with applying to smooth metal as opposed to castings? Only thinking of it due to the lack of grip on the surface.

Don`t suppose you know what the applied nickel looks like do you?

Wouldn't have thought ali would have been sound on a high temp manifold?

Rough surfaces are better for adhesion, smooth is a little tricky, can be gound rough then the new surface polished. A way of hardfacing larger areas...
Nickel should look like nickel lol, will go darker after time through oxide formation at high temperature, but will be pretty resilient...

should be interesting, as i've made a turbo manifold and i'll need to coat it to stop it rusting away.

you can get high temp paints that if applied right will last forever a light shot blast with ally oxide will give it the key needed.
ceramic is probably the best option.
nickel will look brown after a day itll oxidise fast and probably blister with in a year if you subject it to that heat day in day out especially on cast

What would peoples views on a stainless steel coating be, and if it was polished or unpolished?
