having dropped a load of bits of cement and bits in the drains I had to climb down and dig them out with a bucket and trowel there 10 foot deep with steel steps down and just a bit wider than the man hole top so u cant get down and have a bucket next to u I need to clean them out again so knocked the scoop up . a bit of panel beating round a scaffie pole in vice made a nice 4inch radius same as the pipe nicked wifeys broom for the handle and knocked one up in an hour that will save me going back in

thank god it didn't stink . I did go down and it was on my mind that if I did flake out probs not much chance of getting pulled out that's why I didn't want to go back in . I can reach down now with the scoop and live another dayrealy should have had some rope round me and a couple of hefty lads on the other end

I might be wrong but the ‘real’ ones were called Jerrys. Used for scraping out the bottom of trenches, for drainage tiles to cover.

Local framer used to hand dig all his ditches, and covered drainage. He could get a pale of water to run 50yds
