Back in 1988 I was in India. As part of the visit we had a tour round a factory making .303 rounds.
Strips of brass went in the machine and out came .303 cases.
The baskets were passed through an annealing furnace. Tumbled in a polishing drum then shipped to be filled.
Fascinating to see the process.

That steel shell process seems absolutely crazy, hugely labour intensive. It's almost as if the casing is designed to withstand the charge going off but not be contained within a barrel breech as a usual brass casing would be. But how would they seal the end? I bet it's not done like that nowadays.
