Makita Impact Wrench Choice Help

Hi;

I am after an Impact Wrench and thought as I already have Makita 18v Lion Drill with charger and two batteries, I thought I'd get a bare version to save on cost. I want an impact wrench with a 3/8 or 1/2 inch shaft to fit sockets.
The first model I looked at was the TW140DV from Screwfix but my Makita charger is only rated for 14.4 - 18v batteries!!
Then I found an 18v version on Amazon but the battery connection looks different to mine :-(

My charger is a DC18WA U
My Batteries are 18v BL1813G

So I am a little stuck - I don't want to have to buy another battery and charger so any help would be appreciated.

If you want one to work on the standard 18v batteries and compact this is the one you want
The other small 1/2 one is longer and less powerful or you go up to the real beastly size ones that are huge

One of those 12V units is probably no better than putting an adapter bit in an impact driver, in fact many impact drivers have a higher output.

It all depends what you expect it to do, whilst most car wheels aren't torqued more than the 140NM listed the reality is it probably won't undo them.

They look the same as my batteries, I think mine are BL1830[?] they are 3AH.
The number in the model no is approx the doing up torque, if you hadn't noticed that.
Some don't seem to have a greater nut breaking torque.
I bought a DRW285 and it's only failed to undo a few things, but I have not had to take any car wheels off since I had it; so maybe a DTW1000 woudl be better.


And for small stuff I picked up a cheap DTD somthing or other, the things for putting screws
in. With square drive attachements it's really usefull and can snap M8 bolts!

You can not use any of the ones linked, you drill is a G series, this is the domestic version of the Makita stuff and is not compatible with LXT. Given the size of the batteries you have you will not be able to use much of a torque wrench anyway, you need the 4 or 5ah batteries to be able to supply the power.

You can buy some well priced LXT Impact drivers but you will need new batteries and charger to go with it.

As has been mentioned you have a drill that is not compatible with the more usual LXT batteries.
I made that same mistake when I bought one of the knock off Chinese impact guns, ended up having to also buy knockoff batteries and a member here kindly gave me a suitable charger.

Just building an Engine, Subframe and Suspension for a Classic Mini. Saw another guy using one to 'nip' up all of the various bolts etc, before torquing with an appropriate torque wrench.

I use a Makita DTW190Z which is towards the cheaper end of the spectrum but it is a nice tool, It is not powerful enough to undo wheel nuts but if you crack them with a long bar it is a lot faster to remove the nuts and to reinstall with final torquing by wrench (typically about 1/4 turn). It is good for undoing sized bolts (subject to its torque limit) as you do not seem to get any cam out and it is a lot less strain on you arms.

Some of the cheap Chinese ones actually get good reviews, but I suspect it would be a bit hit and miss.

If you are not in a rush it can be worth tracking the prices of Makita stuff, I got my torque wrench for just under £50 (body only)

Just be careful what torque you use depending on what you choose!

It doesn't take much time on small fasteners to become snapped studs giving you a world of pain

I'm sorry but an impact is in a completely different league
Apart from more torque the impact driver won't break your wrist if the bolt snags

Yes but all he wants to do is spin up some nuts and bolts, the drill will have some torque settings on it so argueably it's better than an impact for this application too so there is no need for it to be breaking your wrist if you set the torque appropriately

I didn't say it was better but for speeding up tightening they will do just fine.If was about undoing stuff then that's a different matter

Just bought some of those adaptors, basically I am only going to be spinning up bolts and using a manual torque wrench to torque them up.

had them for about a year ish now dont remove much but fine on cycles not much use on cars motor bikes
