Making Staircase Good For New Rail???

Hi Guys, I hope some of you have some general building type experience? I know nothing about this sort of thing, and the fitting is always the part I like the least.

I need to replace the railing in the pic. The concrete staircase worries me - looks real crumbly.

I wondered about extending the vertical supports down through the concrete and into the ground below, but that'd look pretty weird. Or 'building' a side onto the stairs and filling with some concrete behind? (How???)

Not sure. What would you guys do? It's for a friend of a friend, so I don't mind sorting it for them, if I can.

personally I would want a brick/block wall alongside the stairs to contain the fill and support the outside edge... they are going to fail if its not done soon anyway.

I would not attemppt to do anything with the existing steps as they look too frail to take any work, should be OK as a stair tho from the pics

so easier to fix to new wall? or to ground along side the stair.

That concrete looks at the end of its life, I would take out the lot and replace it with a small steel stair with handrail attached, building regs call for 900 to 1000mm height off the nose of the step for handrails, but unless intended for use by persons with disability , you don't need to cover the bottom 2 treads, that will give more room at the bottom and make it look a lot tidier.

Guys, thanks for your inputs. I kind of figured it was on its last legs. I have the impression that even trying to drill a hole will result in total collapse!

Id perhaps look at concreting in a bottom post, and fixing back to the wall at the back.
