Making handles, please share examples

Good evening all.

I'm wanting to make some simple handles which will fold flat as part of a simple outdoor project. There more for pulling the item along rather than carrying lots of weight.

I've been thinking about bending some round bar stock into shape to make them, although I'm not sure how best to mount them... I'd rather them be able to fold flat rather than be rigid, so I'm guessing welding them straight onto the piece wouldn't work.

As anyone done something similar, and could you share any pictures to give me ideas, or otherwise share any ideas, tips, etc you may have?

The finish of the item will be paint, and it'll be constructed out of mild steel. I don't have any specialist tools for heating or bending materials, although I do have a wood working vice and G clamps.

That looks a good option; seeing that gave me an idea how I could fabricate something similar too - I'm all about doing things to practice atm.

Project is for a dolly for a Chimnera, would bolts hold up to some heat, or am I better welding these on via the holes in the plate? Dolly will be made up from 3mm frame materials and 2mm sheet, what would you suggest?

I’ve no idea, you really need someone with more welding know than me

Edit, oh hang on I’ve made many a BBQ in my time 8mm bolts have always worked a treat (it’s what I’ve got lots of)

Cheers, I'll get these and bolt them on with small bolts then; save me messing up the powder coat finish by welding them.

I usually attach handles, either bolts or plug weld through the existing holes, leaving the weld proud to resemble rivets,

Gosh i must have made lots of different handles. The basic principle is
Round, square or flat stock (to hold)
Curved, round or 90 degrees to shape
Full back plate, weld on or two plates

Embellish?

Rare i would buy handles, less time to make than buy.
