Making a stair case - help

Hi Guys,

I'm after some advice/help.

Iv been given the task at work to make a stair case to a small mezzanine floor,

is there a legal requirement for step width, depth and raise?

iv got a height of 86" to get to, I can only go down the side of mezzanine by 144" (12ft) as theres a wall in the way at bottom so need to allow clearance here for getting on the steps. there will be a door opening at the top of stairs of 36" (3ft).

ideally at the top of the stairs I could do with a platform so your not going from steps into the door way.

Try a staircase designer in google to get you started. If you have a landing at the top you could run the stair up the side of the mezzanine instead of sticking out at a right angle.

As you say it's not a good idea to have a door opening straight onto a descent.
Also if the door swings outwards onto the stair the landing needs to be big enough so that someone stood on the landing doesn't get pushed down the stairs.
Risers need to be equal to avoid a trip hazard.

Note the going is measured from the nose of one tread to the nose of the next tread, not the depth of the tread.

Is there not a requirement for there to be a landing outside a door even if it opens away from the stairs ?

yeah the idea is to run it up the side of the mezz floor, the door will open inwards so not big issues there I don't think.

justneed to decide no if its worth doing it in steel or digging out the wood work tools :S

the above measurements are for domestic, you may need 250 going and 170 rise, yes you need a landing,

if there's room, and you need extra length.. you could always have a platform against the wall, a 90' turn and then a few more steps running along side the wall ?

best to measure a few steps you like first... what looks good on paper might be useless when you actaully walk up/down them
