Magnetic swarf collector ideas ?

Today I've been using my Rage chop saw outside to cut a load of scaffolding pipes to size (for a shed base and also a full width workbench for garage). There was a huge amount of swarf that took ages to clear up so I've decided it's time to investigate making a magnetic collector. In the past I'd use a plastic bag over a magnet but this time I'm thinking of a something more sophisticated. Looking on eBay I see the proper tools are more than I want to pay so am thinking of making one out of something like plastic waste pipe with end blanked off and magnet inside on a rod so it can be pulled upwards so swarf drops off.
Anyone already made such a tool and want to give their tips / design ideas etc.

Cant beat the broom and shovel.
Puka job, brushes and air line followed by shovel loads.

Just a quick clean filled wheelie bin up with this mornings swarf.

Magnetic ok for small areas and odd tidy up anything other than that takes an eternity.
Depends how strong the magnet is. Strong gauze over one end of a tube, plunger attached to magnet.
Quicker and easier to use just the magnet as you have been doing. Mines just a magnet now rarely used.

The sliding tube type picker-uppers are good, but no use for Ali.

Go to your local council tip and blag an old dyson. Mine's not fussy what it picks up

I'm sorry to admit but found one cheap (£17 including P&P) on eBay so bought one instead of making.

The amount of chips that the Rage saw makes is phenomenal and get everywhere. It's the small amounts in corners etc that the magnetic wand is really needed where dustpan and brush can't reach.

Never been even tempted to use a mag cleanup tool myself...

I have a air driven chip cleanup tool, $40 from canada years ago, but you do need a compressor to run it. It works on venturi and hoovers the chips up at high speed and spits them out into a ejector tube which you plop the end of into a sack or bin. It will suck the awkward curly chips right out the depths of the mill table too.

Other than that, a old vaccum cleaner (Ive got a vax set up "wet" for this) works ok if you swap the crinkly hose for one with no ridges in to snag the swarf, or a mk1 stiff brush and and a dustpan with a little brush for smaller areas.

youll never beat mine, its nearly 5 yrs old and loves playing with the magnet on string.
does a fantastic job of tidying up.

I made one with a magnet off ebay, a bit of pvc pipe with the lid end off a pop bottle glued half way up to catch the swarf as the magnet goes past, it works great.
