magnetic pick up tool

having lost tools down wall cavity s and hard to reach places i bought a few n d f b extra strong magnets on fleebay 12mm diameter and mounted it in a brass fitting turned down and threaded 1/4whit to suit the fibreglass rods i use at work. heres a large adjustable spanner held up with magnet

Those magnets are unbelievably strong for their size.
Have you ever pulled a PC hard drive apart and dug the magnets out? They're something else!

Not done a hard drive, but 3.5" floppy drives have goodens inside. But a bit on the big side. Neat idea Brightspark, them rods them cable pulling ones?

I got bitten once by a pair of hard drive magnets, blood blisters, profanity and hilarity from my audience.

I have a commercial version of this tool, gets used once in a blue moon, would not be without it.

I remember dropping a small component down the cam chain tunnel of my honda, I could see it balancing over the depths of the crankcase. Spent an age looking at it thenfished it out with the magnet thingy and had to go and get p****d.

That is not a big spanner, it is the one out of a christmas cracker just mounted near the camera.

The round magnets out of the magnetron in microwave ovens are pretty useful, I use several to hold workpieces to my steel bench for blasting.

Oh yes - I have a little collection of them for two purposes:

holding car body repair patches in place. Put the magnets in a stout plastic bag first.

Picking up swarf. Put the magnet in a strong plastic bag. Put the bag in a plastic disposable cup. Run the cup over the floor/bench to pick up 'swarf' or 'filings' from cutting/grinding etc. Hold cup over bin, carefully remove bag of magnets, filings into bin, no filings irretrievably stuck to the magnet.
