Magnetic drill or drill press ?

In the near future i need a good drill for drilling many 20 - 30mm holes true both sides of 50x50x2 box section ,both sides should drilled in one time ,so without turning the box section around .

Im thinking to buy a drill press with a mag drill adapter so i can use annular cutters . Or a magnetic drill ,but i dont know if its possible to clamp the magnetic drill on 50x50x2 box ,maybe its not thick enough for the magnet ? Someone who knows this?

Which of the 2 drills do you guys prefer for this kind of job?

You wont get a mag drill to stick to the box any sense.
If you have a solid bench, you could stick the drill to that, and clamp the box to the bench.

Smaller ones would likely struggle with the 50mm travel, something to check when looking at machines.

ive just finnished a project at home which needed holes drlling in the same size box as yours,the holes being 28mm wide and i used a 2MT drill straight into my bench drill with plenty of cutting fluid and slow but steady feed speed to stop the drill snagging...I started with a 18mm and stepped up to 22mm then onto 28mm iff you go down this road then drill must have a securly clamped holding vice,nice and slow with the speed and once you start feeding the cut you must keep going otherwise the drill will catch and jam,also plenty of fluid,i use WD40 from a spray as you can get it right down the spiral onto the cutting edge.

Don't do that, just use a pillar drill and broaching cutter arbor.

You can drill a pilot hole right through so that the centring pin is located in alignment on both sides - say 3mm or so. Successful alignment will depend mostly on the way the pilot drill bites into the inside surface of the box when drilling the outward (2nd) hole - pay attention to that.

Then just drill one side with the broach, flip and drill the other. Plenty of oil, slow speed.

That's the fastest and easiest way.

I would do just what astro_al says, buy or make an adapter to put the annular cutter in the drill press. If I needed to do it I'd likely make one - buy a blank end arbor MT3 (or whatever your drill taper is) and bore it for the cutter then use two grub screws to secure. That would give you a very rigid and fast hole drilling setup on a good drill press.

Chunk - most Mag drills have an arbor to mount the cutters that fixes into the shaft of the drill with a #2 Morse taper. All that is needed is to put one of these arbors into the spindle of a drill press either directly if it is #2 MT or using a #2 -> #3 sleeve if it's #3. (Of course some of the cheap and nasty drill presses only have a Jacobs taper on the spindle to directly mount the chuck but they are best avoided anyway!)
