I need to weld up a random hole some twit drilled in the middle of a boot floor of my 306. As it was thin French tin I needed to use a backing piece. I used a piece of flattened copper pipe & held it against the bottom of the hole by placing one of my strong welding magnets under it, sandwiching the copper between it and the boot floor.
When I tried to weld it was nearly impossible with the weld spitting back at me. It was like hitting a pocket of oil or water. I thought the copper was contaminated so I cleaned it, no better. By this stage the copper had got stuck to the back of the weld so I removed the magnet - problem solved, the welder was working perfectly!
It was as if the magnet was pushing away the molten metal from the pool! Anyone else experienced this?
