Magnesium filler rods

Looking at repairing some motorcycle clutch and ignition covers, however they are made of magnesium, I'm reasonably OK with Ali welding and it appears the technique is very similar.
Bit of research says that Az92a should be a good starter for 10, however it appears that magnesium filler rods are like hens teeth and when you do find them you can only buy them in packs.
Just wondering if any of you guys might have a couple of rods I could buy???
Otherwise I think the covers might end up in the bin....

Filler rods are expensive. Most of it seems to be refined in China but appears western companies are the only ones producing filler and so they can charge what they like. A short 16mm bar of chinese magnesium is only a few quid and that might make 100 rods or so..

May be cheaper to make up a sand mould from your covers and cast in alu.

You can buy small packs ~10 rods. The last lot I bought though were in the region of £150

Didn’t know the price of these so I burnt some of them for fun.
They burn very bright.
3.5612 alloy 3mm. Got about 1.5-2kg of them.
Unfortunately shipping is not easy to uk.

get a scrap case and cut strips out of it and use it as filler
i welded the Artie bell senior tt works norton winner crankcase a small defect on an oil gallery had corroded away
my friend had a scrap electron hub which he cut strips out the fins and got them clinicaly clean i used a large bore gas lense cleaned the area with a tungsten burr
with bated breath i hit the pedal and the metal turned realy clean a bit of filler was added and it went perfectly

the other scenario would be ancient castrol r oozing out and contaminating the pool or the pool going chalky white

Thats over £1000 worth there.

Looks like 6% Al, 1% Zn which is what you want really.

More zinc it just makes a right mess of everthing.

Bear in mind magnesium distorts like a banana for fun.

I've scrapped two very expensive rotax and swm covers due to this. After hours of welding and maintaining 70 degrees preheat.
