Mag drill

I've recently obtained an hitachi mag drill, it works well but I have no cutters and don't know what to order? Are they all the same fitment or does the brand matter? Rotabroach etc

Any mag drill cutters will fit your drill. Think the actual shaft of the bit that fits in the drill is called a Weldon shank. Try eBay for good value on cutters.

A mag drill is very safe when sitting on a lump of 12mm flat clean plate. A mag drill is the most dangerous tool on site tho.
I nearly snapped my wrist with one. They don't stick well to shiney galvanise or if the surface is under 10 mm thick or if the surface isn't true. Or when using upside down and it's not safety strapped and someone plugs you out. The can prove lethal if abused.

Just order 'mag drill bits'. Their proper name is a Weldon shank. There's two sizes of Weldon but the bigger ones only come in on 75mm dia and upwards

The minimum plate thickness required for the magnet to stick to seems to depend on the manufacturer - some require a minimum of 10mm, some less. Unibor specify 'ferrous materials from a minimum of 6mm (1/4”) thickness.'
The safety guidance still applies though.

I can't remember what make ours is at work, but I use it regularly on 4 and 6mm box but that's with the drill stood upright.

A good lump of a plate welded behind a vice like mine is ideal for drilling small wall box section and small tricky stuff and very safe.

Don't forget to order the pins to go with the cutters....

Do all the cutters require a pin? How's it held?

The pin as in centre pin. Helps to line the cutter up to the centre point.

Also get a spring for the pin. Helps to push the pin out of the cutter.

they are very versatile,I've even cut long keyways using a guidance jig i made on the mill,enabled me to cut a large /long keyway on a turbine shaft in situ,without that adaptability it would have meant 3 days dismantling.

Not always. Yes in new kit but have seen it missing in used kit that have been put out to hire.
