Mag drill return mechanism.

Following on from my other thread.

Bought a second hand magtron mbq35. Does anyone know how the drill section is suppost to return to the upper position? If i wind it fully up and let go of the handles it drops straight down with no resistance. Should it spring back up like a pillar drill, should it stop where it sits, is it a coiled spring or some other method?

I see some mag drills have an auto feed...and maybe an auto return, not saying this model has just wondering how they work?

Sorry...mag drill virgin so not sure of the in's and out's of them.

They don't auto return.
You can adjust the gib strips so it stays put until you wind it down, or so it falls under its own weight. Too tight and you have to fight it down and can't feel how much pressure you are putting on the cutter, too loose and the cutter wobbles all over the place.

So its a sort of interference fit? Theres a brass sort of alloy strip on either side on the track bit, these the gib strips?

Yes. Usually a line of grub screws with lock nuts on each side. They only need a fractional turn on each one.

Ah, k cheers. The drill did have a bit of play aswell, hopefully just a matter of adjusting them then.

the drill motor carriage should not move unless the handle is turned, but it shouldn't be tight as to stick when moved this will cause cutters to shatter,

Anchor? That's 10 mins away, might see about sticking it in for a service if they do it. Might be the brass/alloy runners are damaged/worn but couldn't get a consistent resistance over all the travel.
