A) Did you do ok financially?
B) Might it be a blessing in disguise which allows you to do what you want to do or does your current personal situation not allow it?
C) Could you diversify from the bike building and make a living doing similar stuff? Race car/kit car stuff maybe? I know there's a million people out there already doing that but if the quality and price is right word will soon spread.
You have a real talent, it would be a shame not to use it to your advantage.

That's bad news, the same thing happened to me in august due to the downturn in building (i was in quarrying).
Luckily i had always kept my hand in doing agricultural repairs and other bits of welding and now do that self employed.
As stuvy says, this could be a good opportunity to get more into the bike building.

Got made redundant too, working out my notice. But get in touch with everyone you know. Call around, go through the usual channels and some of the less usual (Ask at other local shops to see who's busy). Keep your chin up. Show you're dead keen and you'll be fine.
and they tell us that manufacturing is coming back and that we need more enginneers!
so sad to see all this engineering leaving england im only 20 but my dad said when he was my age he could walk of of one job in the morning and into a new one that afternoon

Depending on skills/quals there are still plenty of jobs about, I found plenty of jobs suitable when looking recently.

I have dropped a bunch of cv's all round the estates and called a few local agencies so far. I'm going to make a different cv in the next few days, offering a fabrication service etc. Also have a very interesting opportunity on the table, will have to see how the cards play!
Do any of you guys have some advice on getting small fabrication jobs to do in my workshop?

Burf, I don't know what your skill set is, but I was looking around recently (out of interest rather than need) and realised that maintenance work is a good one to go for. If you have some practical welding, sheet metal and fitting abilities with a clue about electrics, it's a possibility. Anything to avoid production work has got to be a winner....
