Machining in general and plastic help

As you know we have a lathe ( 1908 Drummond)
Turbo kindly put me on to these

So any thoughts just for general messing about and making the odd thing we need.
What would I use to machine plastics for suspension bushes?

just off cuts of plastic I have picked up some possibly nylon

for plastic's in general u will need to use High Speed Steel...... I actualy lap HSS tools on an oil stone after sharpening then straight to the plastic......
Carbide won't cut it, parden the pun........
Carbide def has it's use on a hobby lathe but also HSS......depend on what I'm doing say a short run....
the above will include boring and facing off as well........

I was turning polyamide (nylon) in the lathe a while ago with carbide, and the swarf came off in one long piece, wrapping itself around everything. HSS is better i am told.

Not in my experience, it did exactly the same with me. Could have been 'operator error' though

Polished inserts for ally work well for plastics but I always use hss with a huge top rake.

Nylon might not be the best material for bushes though.

Its just what I have the bikes rarely going to be used and I just need to get it mobile

I've done a few bits in delrin and it does have a habit of coming off in one long strand, you can counteract this by hold somethin near the tool to deflect it but sods law says it will wrap up just when you doing a final cut.

I've not found much different using inserts or HSS, machining delrin makes you look good because you can get a really nice finish

I put my hoover pipe nearby, it all goes in the hoover then.
