Machine shop recommendations in/around Leicester (engines)

I've got a knocking coming from the bottom end of my engine. Suspected con rod (big end) bearing failure.

At the very least im looking to get the crank journals measured and checked for ovality, with the possiblity of some polishing/grinding if needed.

I'm not exactly flushed for cash at the min so if anyone knows of a firendly machine shop in/around leicester that knows there stuff without me needing a tub of vaseline it'd be muchly appreciated.

Its a 91 Nissan 200sx (s13). Engine is a CA18DET (1.8 turbo).

Engine has approx 125k on it but was rebuild approx 30k ago by the previous owner. Im assuming they just chucked a set of standard size shells on and didnt bother touching the crank.

Which engine is it? Always cheaper to bung a second hand unit in if you can find one. Rebuilding even a little bit costs money. Oops - late post.

Machine shops always used to measure things up for me for a tenner. If you fancy visiting Bedford (and picking up a dash from Leicester on the way) I have a micrometer you could use for free.

Thought about throwing another engine in there but then I've no idea how long that is likely to last. Better the enemy you know and all that! Big end failure is fairly common once mileages approach 100k.

New shells are available from £50 (acl duraglide 780). If I can replace them for £100 ish i'd be happy (just spent £300 on a replacement turbo and exhaust + gaskets). Dont want to throw any more money at it really.

Can you get at the big end journals with the sump removed? If so buy/borrow a mic' and measure the crank pins yourself.measure each one in several places and positions to find if there is any taper or ovality.You may only need a new set of good quality shells,

Gordon Stephenson. I can get to the journals by dropping the sub-frame and removing a few brackets giving acces the the sump bolts.

I dont have the right kit to measure them myself though. Whats a mic'? (im assuming you dont sing into it!! )

on a CA the crank will need to come out and will want a grind/polish
nissan states they want new bearing at 100k
best to whip the engine out and do it propperly as you will have metal swarf floating around the engine which would have clogged up the heat exchanger etc..

it will take about the same amount of time to take the engine out as it would to mess around under the car with the sump off

Mic = micrometer.

You can pick them up for a few quid on Ebay make sure you get one that suits the size you want to measure though. For real accuracy I'd go with the old fashioned G shape style. The F shape digital caliper type are good but I find them hader to give a consistent result on round parts. (maybe good enough for your purposes though)
