m2 nut..what size spanner

That's a handy reference Paul, although we do have a couple of odd ones on some of our machines, 16mm spanner for M10 and 18mm for M12!

They do that on cars, did a drop link on me van yesterday, 16mm spanner on an M10.

I saw small head M6 & M8 at Rover, reason given was to prevent over-torquing.

You might find it easier to use BA theads there is much more choice.

the m number refers to the thread not the head size. Generally the common spanners we use are 10, 13, 17, 19, 22mm m6, m8, m10, m12 and m14, m16 but the wagons we get in at work generally use 15, 16, 18 and 21mm i've no idea why a lot of spanner and socket sets generally miss out these sizes.

Something i have always done, buy a set, then fill in the missing ones with matching odd sizes.

I heard from our fixings man months ago that bolt head/nut sizes were changing - similar to the change in phase colours - an EU thing.
He reckoned he was using up the last of the 'old' ones before the new stock came in. Had bags and bags of bolts of them since and me spanners keep fitting them..Dunno.

You could be on to something there. I know that the protocols for the diagnostics had to be made so any generic OBDII scanner could read them after 2004 (i think) to stop main dealers ripping people off for diagnostics, so maybe they have to make parts changeable with 1 set of spanners!

I did a wishbone last week and the bolts were M10 with an 18mm head but the nut was M16. I undid the first one no problem with the socket on the bolt head and open ender on the nut and when I came to undo the other tried to put the spanners the other way round and couldn't understand why it wasn't working till I took them out and looked at the numbers I've noticed a lot are now turning to E Torx fittings instead of hex heads and I read somewhere it is because they are easier to use with production line tooling.
