M12 x 2mm Thread

I've just bought a cheap bearing puller kit & while the construction is quite good the nuts that secure the bars onto the yoke are a loose fit on the thread. I would like to either make or buy better nuts but I measure the major diameter at 11.8mm & the pitch at 2mm which would indicate an M12x2 thread, which doesn't exist!

Is there an imperial thread that is the same dimensions?

Looking at the Zeus book it could be 1/2” UNC, 13 TPI nearly 2mm pitch.

I suppose it could be an oddball like a 15/32"x13tpi as you say it's slack. Or just m12x2 done on a lathe as you could single point it no problem. The nut would be tight but with a tiny bar you'd do it maybe?

yeah could be 1/2" but at 11.8 it'd be slack as a wizards sleeve! Mind I've seen worse on production threads, gage Hinges seem to be the worst!

I'll try to describe this in a way that makes sense.

One end of the bottom bar fits onto the forked yoke using a hex nut, the other end either screws into the bearing splitter or the extension bar above it. The threads on the bars all screw into each other & the splitter perfectly, it's just the hex nut is a very loose fit on all the bars. I took some measurements tonight.

All male threads are OD 11.8mm, root diameter 9.8mm

Extension female end root diameter 10.7mm

Splitter root diameter 10.6mm

Hex Nut Root diameter 11.25mm

As you can see none of the threads are particularly well machined but the nut is just too loose & I'm afraid of it pulling off under load.

I've never cut threads manually on the lathe & I don't think a small female thread would be a very easy way to start! I've not got metric change wheels anyway for the myford.

If I don't think of anything else what I might do is chop off the long 12mm thread, bore & tap the bar M12x1.75, loctite in an M12 stud & use standard M12 nuts.

That's if the bar fits down the bore of the lathe!

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated!

Out of interest, have you tried to run a M12 nut down the thread?

That looks identical to my Clarke branded puller from Machine Mart. The threads are all whacky sizes as I found out when I misplaced an original nut and assumed standard Metric would work. The supplied nuts are a good fit though so maybe yours have been swapped out for the closest thing if they are slack?

Might be worth contacting machine mart to see if they do spares?
