M12 threaded insert for castor?

Hiya all,

I'm making a welding table and it needs to be on threaded casters as my floor isn't perfectly level so I'll need to be able to adjust them a bit.

I've bought four of THESE

Now I need some way of putting a M12 threaded insert into the bottom of the 50mm box section that makes up the frame. Will rivnuts be suitable? If so, will it just be a case of drilling a 16mm hole for the M12 rivnut, and then knocking it in? Or will the thread be tight, so as to expand the rivnut past the hole, thus making it hard to adjust?

I know I could just weld a bolt onto the frame, but I was looking to find a way to have a bit more length to the thread, as there will be a fair bit of weight on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :-)

why dont u just weld a nut into each leg

i would personally use a proper nut welded in rather than a rivnut if it is to be taking any serious weight/abuse

If you want more length on the thread you could get a coupling nut, but a normal one would be fine anyway.

HA, yeah sorry - I meant nut when I said bolt. I could do that, but I thought something with more meat to it would be better?

the coupling nuts are only a £1 or so from toolstation the use them to connect threaded bar together

A rivet nut is the last thing you want to be using for a castor, especially on a welding bench, also there is little point in using extended nuts, a standard nut will be fine, the strength is needed on the endplate that you fit it to, with a bit of weight on it or some hammering they bend very easily,
I make them from 5 or 6mm plate with a nut fully welded to them then weld the plate to the box section, like this, personally for a bench I would have used a plate fixing castor rather than a stem fixing, these were used with adjustable feet, The full job can be seen here, http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/making-stainless-steps.31936/
