metric bolts/setscrews
Hi i work on German furnace equipment and the bolts have a smaller head than the set screws ie m10 setscrew = 17mm af spanner,
m10 bolt = 16 mm af spanner, I think the logic is that a setscrew will only need 1 spanner to tighten as it is being screwed into a threaded component and a bolt will need 2 spanners to tighten as it is passing thru 2 parts and has a nut, if my assumption is correct then as previously stated you dont need 2 spanners of the same size to tighten a bolt, this the case on Schmetz Vacuum hardening furnaces that I maintain, all nuts for m10 = 17 mm af m12 = 19mm af, m8=13mm af m6 = 10mm af, I think this purely a continental standard as i have just bought 150 off 65xm12 bolts and 350 nuts from a uk supplier and all are 19mm af,ps this lot cost £62.40 delivered HTH
