M&W Micrometres

Hi folks. Just registered, and first time to post (although I've read various threads here over the years)

I have some Moore & Wright micrometres, and I've been trying to find some way online of dating them, or using the model no. on the backs to get some info, but nada.

Seems like this might be the spot to ask. The picture attached shows two of them, the smaller being a no.1961MZS, the larger a no.1966MZS.

Any and all info greatly appreciated

I'm an old fashioned sorta guy...hence the vintage tools.

I did take the two I have out for a meal.even bought flowers. Didn't get anywhere, though...

I've a small heap of M&W stuff, and wondered the same regarding dating.

I trawled the net briefly and found nothing, so would equally be interested if there is a way of dating them.

Hello Cletus. I think the problem was they made the same models of mic's for so long without updating them much, if at all. You could contact the Ken Hawley collection in Kelham island in Sheffield, someone there might know or be able to point you in the right direction.

There's are two types of Moore and Wright anything.

Pre-Bowers and post-Bowers.

Anything Pre-Bowers is good.

Anything post might be good or may be average.

I'va always preferred Shardlow tools, they are good but not as commonly available as M&W's.

I have a M & W 1/2" micrometer which came in a cardboard box. Had a look at the paperwork which came with it, but nothing to indicate age.

I think this is the problem, they continued making the same range of tools for years, which makes the dating impossible. But I'm no expert, oh, no.

Perhaps use the contact link on their website , having first taken some decent close up pictures of the micrometers so you can see all engraved marks as well as things like the style of and an end shot of the end ratchet knob .... you might be able to send them with your contact email .

Both them mikes early 60s

actually id say late 60s. My Moore and Wright had 1961 scribed into it and it was slightly older style.
In the 70s they went to the blue plastic in the cases

Moore & Wright stamped the year on 961 and 961B mics in the 50's. They were stamped on the thimble just before the word England under Moore & Wright Sheffield, eg 54. I've never seen the stamping on earlier or later mics. It's hard to spot in pictures because the pointer covers that part of the thimble.

Yeah, but, it's nice to know how old they are, I think.
