LT Meet

We went to Bicester over the weekend for a Series1 VWLT meet. Since a number of you do FaceAche you may wish to look up VoLT which may have a bit of information and more pictures, since I know you like pictures.

There is a V8Rover in the tintop and a Lexus 3.5ltr in the yellow-striped neighbour, otherwise D24, D24T, no D24TIC, and 6cyl Petrol/LPG, and two rides on my bike.

They are some great looking vans! I love the old LT's properly made vans! I have a couple of the later ones 02 plate and I love them too one is just past the 300000 mile mark now and never misses a beat even with a mad skin head like me in charge of it!

I used to drive an LT35 with a massive alloy Luton body on it, must have put over 50,000 miles on it hauling antiques round the country for an auction house.
The cab used to get so hot with the engine being underneath that my lunch used to cook so I got in the habit of hanging it from a net bag from the near side wing mirror, worked well until some school kid nicked it as I waited in traffic in Southampton!

I used to be in the National Street Van Association back in the mid 80's and of the lads had an LT with a yank V8 mounted just behind the front seats. A great guy by the name of Bob Webster, he lived on a farm near Ingliston, up by Edinburgh airport, and invariably took the long-distance award at van runs. He reckoned it did about 14 mpg and he could tell you every filling station on the A1!

30 years on and I still miss GWF 999N, my old mk 1 Transit. Quad carbed 3 litre v6, overdrive transmission, high ratio diff from a Zephyr (iirc), enough marker lights to make the rocker switch get hot and make the alternator cough, huge chrome air horns on the roof, and a blue fur-lined interior! My dear old a Dad used to shake his head and mutter something about it looking like a travelling knocking shop!!

Have a look at Olly Chambers. He had, and possibly still has?, the most incredibly customised mk1 transit called "De Devil". An absolutely stunning van, and to boot, he was a really nice guy to talk to. He'd been there and done it where customised transits are concerned, and was always happy to have a blether about vanning, usually over a beer or six!!

And this thread has sealed it for me. For a while I've been pondering a project I've wanted to get stuck into for a lot of years. I am now officially on the hunt for a crew cab transit to convert into an artic. Off with the body and on with a 3/4 fifth wheel, convert the rear cab into a sleeper, polished ally beer barrel fuel tanks, big air horns, (naturally!), and plenty of marker lights and spotlights on the roof.

Just don't tell OH please, or my testicles will be in grave danger.......
