Howdo chaps.
I'm changing lorries next week and my new one needs a few tweaks. It's an artic with a 50 ton crane behind the cab, the result of which is that there's no dedicated storage for such as my ladders. I thought about making a rack out of angle or box, that's part of a full length "rail" that I can bolt to the existing hardware on the rear wall of the cab. I can probably incorporate extra warning beacons and extra work lights on it at the same time. FWIW, the firm are happy for me to do the work in company time, and they'll pay for materials. I'd rather do the work myself because it will be what I need, rather than what somebody else thinks I need.
Question is, what material is best? I will mention that as the lorry is new, anything I do has to look good and be in keeping. I've no intention of bolting rusty angle iron brackets onto the better part of £200k's worth of lorry.
Pro's and con's wise, s/s will look better, especially if I have it polished, but it'd more expensive.
Mild steel is cheaper but needs coating. Aluminium is easier to work but how will it last?
Thoughts are appreciated.
