A mate brought round a shaft from a slide hammer. Essentially a length of steel round bar with a thread cut on each end; one end's thread was damaged.
Not to worry, says I, I'll turn off the damaged thread, rethread to slightly smaller and knock up an acetal insert for the handle, then swap ends.
So I cracked me knuckles, fired up the lathe.. and machined the wrong bloody thread off.

look on the bright side, just tell him both looked a bit suspect so you did both while you had it

If you have a round handled 1/2" ratchet which is knackered, cut the ratchet end off with angle grinder and the handle makes a good sturdy punch or drift, but don't be like me and have the old one lying on the bench while you cut the ratchet off the new one you just bought.

Or, weld the whole caboodle back to front. Stare at the mess, curse, cut it up, answer the phone and then repeat the whole process. Done that more than once. (but not on the same job...)

Accidents happen from time to time! I use a marker to roughly mark out where I have to machine sometimes.

Now, Is their any chance of screwcutting the thread into the remaining length of bar or is it too short?

I know someone who made up an ally chequer plate load liner for his pickup and had it all worked out perfectly how to make it with minimal wastage.
All went well, said person cut one side panel and had it fitting perfectly so copied the shape to the other side...............but forgot to mirror it!
Said person then had to spend almost as much as a full sheet would cost on an offcut to do the other side panel.

Haha, nice one Woz.... I know of a substation that has a very complicated galvanised chequer plate cable trench cover...installed pattern down cos i forgot to reverse the pattern when i marked it out on the plain side...i feel your pain.

They sat a great big switch unit over most of it, so no big problem, i wouldnt have done it otherwise.
I have a habit now of writing things like 'top', 'bottom', 'cut this end' and such on things in bright yellow paint marker to save little slip ups like that!

All the usual ones.My favourite is making a sculpture and wondering what is wrong.Oh, two left feet, hands and feet on the wrong sides. reversing things is so easily messed up let alone doing them upside down as well.
A quote from a mate who is a cabinet maker.
'Anybody can be a craftsman; a true craftsman can hide it when he messes things up'.

I think with these examples we get tied up by the details and forget to step back and look at the bigger picture, seduced by our apparent competence.

It is great when it is some other idiot that has done it. the weird thing is we all enjoy displaying our incompetence. is it a man thing or do the female of the species just hide this inadequacies?

Well I thought of that but my Metric lathe lacks the necessary conversion gear to let me cut Imperial threads
