Looking for an engine lift but?

I am after an engine lift, biggest capacity i can so 1ton plus really.
But i see that there are so many new for sale for same as second hand. i dont like to buy cheap but as its just now and then tool are they ok or dodgy? cheapo chinese stuff again ?

I have a 1 ton one around £80 iirc and yes cheap tat but does the job. I use it infrequently so not worth me buying an expensive one. Don't work under an unsupported load and they are fine in my experience (others may differ!)

Yes indeed, from Ebay. I bought it to lift the lathe I bought from @eLuSiVeMiTe and it worked well. I have also lifted my mill etc with it.

Wow @W.olly I just looked and they seem to have gone up a bit since last year! I only paid £80 delivered and thought it might be rubbish but is quite good.

Could`nt be bothered to wait for a £30 saving in the offer so paid £180 for it h aha. used once though so in great nick.

The SGS one should have been through better QC so it is a good decision. Especially as the price has gone up so much!!

Yes, they make, or made good stuff, rather that than spend the same on cheapo rubbish at some price. and 2 ton so can pick the boat up aswell ha ha

I've got a 2 ton from ebay, it was the cheapest one I could find, had it nearly 10 years and its been used and abused, still going strong. Used it for moving the bridgeport, lathe, 4'x4' cast iron table I got from @Woody.v8 and its not failed yet.

Sounds like a 50/50 chance on build quality then with these cheapo ones, its as i thought at first though like most things, has to be a reason why they are cheap. Glad i went with a better make now.

I totally agree. It also helps if you can look at the item and evaluate its probable failure mode. The welds on mine are good but if they were not, for the price I would have welded them up and added strengthening plates etc. You certainly get what you pay for and the CE mark on many items is not worth the ink

No it wasn’t. It bent straight over the ram mounts.

bought a chinesium special ages ago, (10 years +) when it arrived, the weld quality was shocking, undercut and spatter everywhere... I reckon they only had one weld plant running flat out, thick or thin same mig....
To be fair the ram etc, was fairly decent. Spent a wee bit of time cleaning up the welds, and general repairs to the wheels / castors, and overall it's been fine. That said, I never lift anywhere near a ton with it, so it's already well under it's capacity (2T), would I trust it anywhere near it's rated capacity, no way.... But if I got to the point I was needing to lift anywhere near 2 tonnes, I wouldn't be using an engine hoist anyway.

Have seen a lot of these things around, and they all seem to be a fairly generic design, like you say quality might just be a question of chance...

think the best way is just to accept that when it arrives, that you'll have some clean up to do...

I think they are Chinese tons!

I bought one to lift some stuff about then sold it on. Was only lifting 750kg max and not very high or far, just enough to get stuff on or off a trailer. The one I had was rough. However, I couldn't buy the bits for what I paid and as far as making one goes, I couldn't be arsed - no time. Spent most of my working life lifting and slinging one way or another so was always on the right side of things with margins of error and things. The weak link really would have been that hoist.

Interestingly the ram on mine was not chromed.

definitely, and that's the key point, are they fit for budget, think the answer is aye, but with a lot of reservations and as long as you go in eyes open, you'll be right.. I'm the same as you, worked around rigging and lifting everyday, so you soon get to know what's right, and not..
