Looking at - Mountfield Battery Lawnmower ?

I love my old Suffolk Punch mower, it gave me 30 years of trouble-free service, but now it’s less good; needs lots of TLC. The muscles and joints in my septuagenarian back are very unhappy about starting it. Old Zenith carbs can be problematic and are impossible to replace with new ones.

I’m looking at buying a Mountfield Princess 38Li battery-powered mower (£329 inc VAT), as reviewed here https://myhomefarm.co.uk/mountfield-princess/
Would be buying from a local Mountfield dealer. I live out in the sticks, have very few mower dealers close by and both sell Mountfield at the budget end of their stock. One dealer is a git and one seems very pleasant... and maybe the package could be sweetened?

Mountfield may not be in the premier league for mowers, but I don’t need to to last 30 or even 20 years.
Any experience or views of Mountfield? It's my birthday in 2 weeks .

can't u buy a Honda petrol mower......I'm 76 and have bad arthritus in my shoulders.......
They are always easy to start and can come with drive wheels or a drive roller.....
Mine was used when I bought it and I've had over 20 years....
It still starts 2nd pull, cheap to run fuel wise....although it has a slight blue exhaust smoke for the first few seconds now....thats been the same for last 5 years or so, no change....
as an addition......I built a walk behind strimmer using a Honda engine thats gotta be over 30 years old.....runs as above.....
for small mower machines there's nothing else to compare.....
Battery mowers sound like trouble waiting to happen......
I beleive Mountfield are at the lower end of the market and their machine will be made in the far east....
nothing wrong with China etc except when stuff is made to a price.....
Can u buy an electic mower from Lidils ?.....thats where I'd look first on the cheaper end of the market....

comes with self propelled as well via its gearing so im not pushing it often

i wouldnt touch electric

starts second pull but nowadays you can fit an electronic starter on most things

I've got one, this year will be it's 4th season. The concept works well for me as I have 6 small lawns with a flight of steps to negotiate. The dead man's handle broke on it last year so I installed a simple switch. It's light, the blade is slower than a mains mower, if the grass is thick and wet it struggles however it has done the job. I won't buy another as I'm going over to Makita.

No idea about mountfield cordless ones, but I've got a metabo cordless and wouldn't go back to petrol.

The metabo one uses 2 batteries at once (for 36v), my garden is about 20m×12m. Ground is pretty rough. It will do that plus about 30m of verge with enough charge left to stick the batteries into the strimmer and go around the lot again.
I think the last petrol mower I had was a 125? That would stall on damp grass/big lumps. The metabo has about the same amount of power. Ie, it still stalls but its an instant restart!
I've only actually cut the grass once since getting it as my missus is happy to use it!

Only thing is, I already had plenty of suitable batteries & chargers.
2× 5.5ah metabo batteries and 2 chargers cost more than the mower.

I've not seen the price of the mountfield stuff but I'd guess the batteries & charger make up a good proportion of the cost?

At a guess I'd think you would be spending £150+ towards the batteries in which case I'd at least want them to offer a few other things that were compatible with the same batteries?

I think most power tool makers offer garden kit now, metabo and bosch certainly do quite a range, bit easier to justify the price if you can also use the same batteries for a drill and an angle grinder..

Although I suppose they should last longer and probably actually be charged when you needed them if they were dedicated to the mower..

I don’t think Mountfield are the same quality as they once were and now just trade off the name.
I would recommend battery over petrol any day having had an Ego mower for a while.
Assuming you want a roller for the stripes still then Hayter and Stihl do some good ones, rotary Ego or again Stihl

When people say they wouldn't go electric or battery, then why? I have a mains Flymo mower, my very first ever mower bought in 1981. Works as well today as it did then and it's never, ever failed to start. I've got a Bosch cordless hedgecutter; fine for the last 5 years and a Titan cordless strimmer, fine for the last two years.

I agree that the Mountfield name is not what it was, but at my age I don't need it to last for ever, but it has a 5yr guarantee, which seems like a long time to me.

Visiting one of the dealers last week, he had only 2 secondhand petrol mowers for sale for which he was offering only 6 months warranty. cannot recall what they were but both had Briggs and Strattons.

I am still shopping around; the brand new, battery driven Mountfield is an option which just drifted in to view to day.

Next door have a Husqvana; he moans at me cos the "things" that fall from my enormous Douglas Fir jam it up. I tell him I'm growing it to be the main spar for a DeHaviland Mosquito replica I'm going to build .

Nothing wrong with a battery mower, I bought no 1 son a Honda which despite his neglect of it is fine. I doubt as you’re on here you’re the sort to neglect kit, so the Mountfield should do you fine, crack on.

i have the petrol and i have the hover mower and i prefer the petrol anyday alot faster on the same piece of grass and it also picks up the grass compared to the hover

my brother bought the battery grass collector mower and i just chuckled at them taking so long on a smaller piece of grass as i refused him to use either the petrol or the electric hover and certainly not after seeing him belt the blade on some stones and just carry on after

I’d say go for it but my only reservation would be the brand, I’d seriously consider a traditional battery tool manufacturer as they offer so much more from the platform. If your genuinely not worried about longevity then the Milwaukee is the one to have but you will want large high output batteries (applies to any brand).

When they are working (and one of them has just done the first cut of the year, but was a pain to use), my Suffolk Punches (I have three of them) make all other mowers pale into insignificance. That's why you can still get new cylinder mowers (petrol ones and with battery starters)... if you have the cash!

I work either side of that fence.

At work, I refuse point blank to have any battery equipment. I want to make sure the equipment can work as long as I do, per day. Refilling a petrol tank is easy. Drained batteries stop play for the day.

At home, I prefer battery mowers mainly for the weight factor. Less propensity to rut the ground. Storage location is also less of an issue with battery kit.

Some things do have more poke when petrol engined powered, too. For some reason, you also seem to get better feedback from some petrol tools too. Strimmer being one example. Hard to describe, but you have more feel for the task in hand with petrol equipment.

I bought a Honda petrol mower, its vastly better than its predecessors. But I have to admit, Im seriously considering going for two robotic mowers, I have even sorted the power to where the bases will go, if only they did right up to the edge to save the need to strim. I did consider going battery all the same brand, till I added up the total cost, saw, mower, strimer…..
But for the more serious mower action, I have both tractor and ATV options, and do like a nice striped field.

Mountfield are owned by Stiga, who also own Atco, fairly big mower manufacturers. Not had much dealings with their battery gear. I can however thoroughly recommend the ego mowers and battery kit, very well built, and brilliant parts and warranty backup.

I worked at a Mountfield dealer for years. Mountfield was a British independent company and made excellent machines. Always let down by Briggs and Stratton engines. They ceased to exist years ago, and have been bought by a few companies since then, so are yet another thing using a brand name trading on past history. What you get now will be made "overseas" and not be a patch on what they were.

Do yourself a service and buy a Honda. They start really easily, and the engines are virtually indestructible. I have an Izy, which is on its third deck (they rust, as all steel decks do) and an Izy engine that is fitted to a forty year old aluminium deck.

Our near neighbour has bought a Ryobi battery mower, but batteries do not last long enough to complete the job.

If your joints are past a pull start or manual steer then a key start honda engined ride on model might be a good choice.
A robot mower would be the ultimate for you if the lawn is one area, cuts as often as you want.
Suspect a battery powered cutter might need numerous cuts as it will struggle with long wet grass.
