Anyone know what this torch is so i can order a few new cups etc
Its my first tig so a cheap one just to learn with
Its a murex transarc
What cup sizes shall i order to learn with? Im guessing il use a 1.6 mm tungsten? Thanks all
Looking at it it's the same size as mine Wp9/Wp20 spares should fit it. Is it air cooled. A torch that size that is not water cooled is only good for 100amps consistent use. Gas cup sizes 6,7 should do you nicely.
1.6 tungsten should be ok for the current range of your unit. If you start stepping up and above 120amps DC then a 2.4 might serve you better but the torch will get hot.
AC is a different ball game as that puts more strain on the tungsten so you would step up at lower currents and it is dependent on where your balance is set also.
Ok cheers i havent picked the machine up yet i just want to order some things for it, so i got it ready, its only a cheapo i think and what iv learnt its a scratch start as has no pedal, cheers guys
Murex is a well respected brand I do hope it's a good one.
Just before you do hand over the cash are you buying this to do mainly TIG or mma? As it's an mma unit really with scratch start TIG. If your only really interested in the TIG side it may pay u to buy a hf unit
Yeah thoriated is in my opinion the best tungsten for DC welding. They are becoming more difficult to get now though as there are health issues linked to the radioactive dust that comes off them when grinding. I use them all the time and grind them in a tungsten grinder. Wear a dust mask if your unsure. Lanthanated (gold) are a good DC tungsten also and can be sourced anywhere. They are a multi process tungsten electrode so suitable for AC also.
